learn with leon is an Indianapolis based learning program where students are given personal tutoring sessions on STEM topics from a professional data scientist and university lecturer. Lessons are completely based on the student's goals, with an emphasis on learning in a way that works best for them. In particular, we will prioritize deep understanding, setting the conceptual foundation needed to excel in both standardized exams as well as general schoolwork.We will use both traditional learning frameworks (e.g., Khan Academy) along with methods that cultivate an applied level of mastery to be used beyond the classroom (e.g., Google Colab). See below for more on this.
khan academy
Khan Academy is an industry leading educational environment, and we will use it as our main learning platform. This gives us access to practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard for tracking learning progress.
google colab
Google Colab is a powerful, cloud-based computing environment used across the tech industry. Coding is actually incredibly impactful when it comes to learning in STEM, so we will use this tool to help practice and apply concepts we learn.

the process
All sessions will occur during the summer months between late-May through early-August.
This is a good thing! It means we can focus our time specifically on the areas the student needs the most (without the distraction of other classwork). It also affords us the ability to set our own due dates and deadlines based on personalized learning progress.I recommend at least three sessions for all students ...
1. intro
First, we get to know one another, and discuss goals. We will also set up Khan Academy (see below).
This first session is free!
2. discover
During our second session, we will explore the topics which are most challenging for the student, and start building a foundation to work from going forward.
3. learn
By the third session, we will be working on exercises, going through examples, and starting to build intuition for the subject matter.
4. grow
From this point on, we grow through more and more challenging content. As we go, we will continue to check in on the goals set during session 1.

No need to pay now, we will settle payment after the session is through. :)
about me
As you probably guessed, my name is Leon (Johnson)! I am a Lecturer of Data Science at Indiana University – Indianapolis, teaching graduate-level courses in mathematics, statistics, Python programming, and data visualization. Prior to my post at IUI, I taught at the Metis Data Science Bootcamp out of NYC, and I've worked professionally as an educator and a data scientist at multiple start ups as well as in the U.S. Air Force. I'm a musician, philosophy enthusiast, and a parent, and I'm excited to learn with you!
Can we have sessions at my house?
It depends! If you are within a reasonable distance of downtown Indianapolis, we can definitely have sessions at your home. We can chat about it during our initial session.
Does the hourly rate change based on session frequency?
No. The rate listed above is a fixed rate for all sessions, whether we meet once or 100 times.

Can I set up "autopay" for regular (e.g., weekly) sessions?
While this could make things easier, it adds a level of complexity that is not ideal for contingencies. So instead, each payment will always be settled at the end of each session.
